Andre Onana to Manchester United: Old Trafford senses a reunion as former Ajax goalkeeper is identified as a replacement of David De Gea

Manchester United has caused a movement in the summer transfer window as they have officially sent a formal proposal to former Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana. United boss Erik Ten Hag has identified his former Ajax number 1 as his first choice keeper for the next season.

Onana to the “Theatre of dreams?”

Andre Onana, one of the greats of the legendary season of Ajax when the Dutch team had reached the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, is touted to reunite with his former boss Erik Ten Hag, when he comes to pursue his dream in the “Theatre of Dreams”, at Old Trafford. The Cameroon international, who has spent five years under Ten Hag in Ajax, has played an integral role for the Dutch team over the years.

After switching allegiance to Italian side, he had had his fare share of contribution after he led Inter Milan to the finals of Champions League this season, before narrowly losing out against Manchester City, owing to a Rodrigo screamer at the goal. United has offered a proposal of 39 million euros for the star, but Inter Milan would be looking for an offer more than 55 million euros to secure the deal for him.

Reunited at United?

Erik Ten Hag would look up to his former numero uno keeper as possible choice for replacing David De Gea, provided the Spaniard legend leaves the “Red Devils”. Onana had always been the favorite for Ten Hag, and owing to his recent exploits for Nerazzurris in the Champions League, he would be a perfect fit for Manchester United, aligning with the style of Ten Hag.

After De Gea is technically a free agent as his contract has expired, United has targeted Onana as their potential prospect, guarding the goal. According to Inter vice-president and former Argentine legend Javier Zanetti, “When you have important players it’s normal that there are requests, but for now Onana is one of our players and we hope to keep all the important ones. The transfer market has just begun, anything can change, but Inter have always shown themselves at the top when building important teams.”

Inter chief Ausilio had intimated about the official bid from United as he was heard saying, “As of today [Wednesday], the proposals are not at the level we expected. He’s one of the strengths of the team and with strong players we’d like to move forward. If opportunities arise, we’ll evaluate them, but to date they haven’t arrived or they don’t meet our expectations. In this moment he’s our goalkeeper and Andre is key player for us – we’d like to keep him, then we’ll see what happens.”
