La Liga champions FC Barcelona has once again caused a stir in the transfer market as they have signed star Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez. The Spain international has agreed terms to don the Catalan colors for a period of two years as his addition would bolster Barca’s defense.
Inigo Martinez joins FC Barcelona
Inigo Martinez has been one of the top shields for La Liga side Athletic Bilbao for the last few seasons as it is through his strong and sturdy defending the Basque club has been saving their blushes, often. The Spain international has been a regular for Bilbao as well as their Basque opponents Real Sociedad, and has featured in more than 350 outings for these teams.
He has been on Barca’s radar since many weeks as Barcelona had to bolster their defensive setup following the legendary departure of their seasoned defender Jordi Alba. With the defensive line-up boasting of the traditional “B-A-C-K” comprising Balde, Araujo, Christensen and Kounde, Inigo’s addition would bolster and enhance Xavi’s plan.
The contract on pen and paper would be signed shortly as the player has agreed to seal the deal.
“An agreement has been reached”
A formal statement from Barcelona was announced as the player was welcomed to the club. It read, “An agreement has been reached between FC Barcelona and Inigo Martinez for the player to join the Club after his contract with Athletic Club ended. The player is set to sign a two-year deal that ends on June 30, 2025, with the release clause set at 400 million euro. The Club will provide further details about Inigo Martinez’s presentation as a new first team player in due course.”
The defender has become the second signing for the Catalans this season as the La Liga champions has already grabbed hold of former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan as he has been included in the squad which has Frenkie De Jong, Pedri and Gavi.
Along with Inigo and Gundogan, Barcelona has also managed to rope in Brazilian wonderkid Vitor Roque who will join the club from Atletico Paranaense, a star who has followed the footsteps of his compatriot Neymar, owing to his exploits in the Brazilian league.
