Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard, widely recognized for his world-class goal against Argentine in 2018 World Cup Round of 16 game, has decided to switch his allegiance to Italian giants Inter Milan, the runners-up of UEFA Champions League last season. He joins Yann Sommer as the second player who has traversed the Inter Milan-Bayern corridor this season, thus trying out his luck in the competitive Italian league.
Ben Pavard joins Inter Milan
Benjamin Pavard, often known for his swerving volley in the 2018 edition of World Cup against Argentina, has decided to pursue his “Italian Job” at Inter Milan, who were the runners-up in UEFA Champions League last season. Simone Inzaghi’s men have been one of the heavyweights over the last few seasons as they have won the Scudetto few years back, and last season, had grabbed the opportunity to acquire a domestic double, winning the Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup. Pavard, who has been a defensive stalwart for Bayern over the years, has been deployed at the right back position under several managers he have played, including Julien Nagelsmann.
A world cup winner with France in 2018, Pavard has always been the talk of the town owing to his exploits in the defensive sector, as his talents ranged from impeccable long passes from the defense to penetrating run-ins into the opposition defense, and scoring goals with finesse. He has spent four years with the Bavarians, winning the Champions League with them in 2020, and played an integral role in leading the team to their coveted silverware.
One of the expensive signings
Pavard is set to become one of the expensive signings for the Nerazzuris, with his transfer fee surmounting to 33 million dollars. According to reports, Pavard has signed a five-year contract with Simone Inzaghi’s men, thus sporting the Inter jersey till 2028. It was heard that he has contacted former Bayern teammate Sommer, who recently joined Inter and French teammate Marcus Thuram, who have reportedly briefed him about the atmosphere at Inter.
He was heard saying, “We spoke a few times. Marcus and I were texting. He told me that the atmosphere here is amazing, that this is a top club. I’m happy to be at a team of this level.” Although Pavard played as a right-back in Bayern, he would preferably play in the central defending position for Inter, were De Vrij, Darmian and Acerbi are three main choices for Inzaghi this season, where he is deploying his three-throng defensive set-up.
With Pavard’s addition, Inter would bolster their defensive set-up as he would also bring with him his exceptional ability of scoring goals and breezy solo runs on the wings. He has also featured for the French national team, playing in 49 fixtures for Les Bleus. Inter has won their first two games in this season, both by margins of 2-0, and would look to continue their impressive streak in the upcoming fixtures.
