Cesar Azpilicueta Joins Atletico Madrid, Ends Glorious 11-Year Chelsea Career

Chelsea defender, Cesar Azpilicueta is all set to make a return to his home country and join the Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid after he has agreed to a deal of two long years on a free transfer.

The Spanish international still had one year left as a part of his contract extension that he had done last summer with his Premier League club, Chelsea; however, Chelsea will be letting their skipper depart from England for nothing.

Cesar Azpilicueta is already being treated as a club legend by fans worldwide owing to a decorated and trophy-brimming career he has had with Chelsea, which is coming to an end finally.

Azpilicueta had joined the English club long back in 2012 from Marseille who play in the French Ligue 1, and has gone ahead to make a total of whopping 508 appearances for Chelsea for over 11 seasons played.

His decorated career at Chelsea has seen him being honoured with multiple trophies which include the League Cup, FA Cup, two Europa League victories, two Premier League trophies and, of course, the UEFA Champions League title as well, which he had lifted as the captain back in 2021.

The 33-year-old’s had his run in the club back in 2016/17 season, where they won the title under then manager Antonio Conte, Azpilicueta himself enjoyed his best personal form in the season apart from team victories. He has also flourished under nine different permanent managers with Chelsea.

Following Mason Mount’s departure from Chelsea earlier this Wednesday, who had also stated that he wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans, this is the eighth first-team player to exit from the Premier League giants Chelsea.

Chelsea getting rid of old players, new squad under Pochettino?

It seems that Mauricio Pochettino too eager to empty the benches for fresh slots so he can rebuild the team from scratch without the old names who had previously seen success with the club in the past, seeing them as a hinderance probably. Sadly, this includes Azpilicueta as well.

The defender will be returning to him homeland for the first time ever, since he left La Liga and Osasuna, from where he had graduated from youth ranks in the past before making it big in 2010. Ever since making his debut in 2013, Azpilicueta has also made 45 appearances for country.
