FC Barcelona endured a busy day at the transfer deadline period as they have agreed terms with La Liga counterpart Girona to send defender Eric Garcia, who will be playing for the “Blanquivermells” for a season-long loan, which will see Garcia ply his trade with them till 2024. According to football transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano and several significant news outlets in Catalan media, the deal does not comprise a ‘buy’ option, which guarantees his return to Camp Nou next year.
Eric Garcia joins Girona on loan
Eric Garcia has been one of the most sought after defenders in the Spanish football circuit. Owing to his defensive prowess in the central area which involves ball clearance and effective passing with finesse to midfielders, he has always been one of the favorites for the Catalans. Having graduated from La Masia, Barcelona’s talent powerhouse, Garcia decided to switch his allegiance to England, and under the watchful vigil of Pep Guardiola, former Barcelona boss, Garcia rose through the ranks of City, and was asked to shoulder the responsibility of leading the youth side, representing the Cityzens in UEFA Youth League.
Garcia has been one of the important players under Xavi, who was reluctant to let go of the defender, as his services have proved useful in various crunch occasions, thus saving the club’s blushes. But the player was looking for an increase in game time, as with the Catalan side, he could not cement his position in the squad as a starter owing to the vast popularity of the famous “B-A-C-K”, comprising another La Masia prodigy Alejandro Balde, Uruguayan wall Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen and Joules Kounde.
A City star, falling down the pecking order
Eric, although he has been thriving in Etihad, wearing the Manchester City colors, was mostly a bench-warmer with the La Liga giants, coming on the field for potential substitutions. But, his playing style was never up to the mark for the Catalans, as he would mostly sit on the bench, waiting for his turn to showcase his talent on the field. As a result, he used to be the victim of potential jeers and boos from supporters whenever he used to come on, and showed moments of poor defending owing to the lack of game-time.
As Eric joins Girona, he gets the opportunity to become a regular starter for them, and would look to shoulder the responsibility of a star defender in every game. The La Liga veterans would look to utilize the experience of Garcia, as he comes on the back of playing in heavyweights like Manchester City and FC Barcelona.
Although he featured in comparatively lesser games in last season, he amassed 70 games in two seasons.
Eric has been loaned to Girona, hoping that he would earn valuable experience with the Spanish side, and would return at Barcelona, becoming a solid potential for Xavi’s men, thus suiting the standards for being a Barcelona defender. He would be slated to become the stopper which City and Barcelona had thought of shaping of, as a La Masia star would always look up to become a legend at his parent club, thus returning to Nou Camp as a veteran defender.
