Fabinho: Liverpool’s star midfielder leaves Anfield, to join Saudi champions Al-Ittihad

One more star for Liverpool joins a Saudi Arabian outfit this season, as Brazilian Fabinho, one of the noted midfielders under Jurgen Klopp, has left the former Champions League winning side, to try his luck in Saudi champion side Al-Ittihad. Subsequently, he joins former Premier League rival N’Golo Kante and reigning Balon D’Or winner from France, Karim Benzema, in the club.

Fabinho, latest star to feature in the Saudi Pro League

Saudi Arab has set on a mission to rack their league up with some of the legends of football. It all started with Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, when he departed his boyhood club Manchester United to ply his trade in the Gulf country. But, in this whirlwind transfer season, Saudi has stacked up their resources with some of the big names in the game, starting from Karim Benzema, Riyad Mahrez, Kante, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane among many others.

Fabinho becomes the latest entrant to join Saudi football league, and the latest Liverpool star to switch allegiance, after former captain Jordan Henderson has joined legendary Steven Gerrard, at Al-Ettifaq, where Gerrard is stationed as a manager. Fabinho was rumored to join his new side when he did not travel to Germany as a pre-season training for the club, and was consequently left out of Liverpool’s Singapore trip.

The former Monaco star joined the Reds in 2018, after a successful stint at the French side, for a considerable amount of 39 million pounds.

Fabinho resorted to social media to express his gratitude and tribute to the supporters of the club. He was heard saying, “I say this with a heart full of joy: I love this club. Thank you, Reds, for everything we’ve experienced together.” His respect for the club was unfathomable as he expressed his feelings by saying he has represented Liverpool’s badge “with the greatest honor and happiness possible.”

Fabinho is one of the latest inclusion in the squad after they have achieved the signing of Benzema and Kante, as the club board said in reference to signing the Brazilian in efforts to, “reinforce the team with outstanding players, who will support their journey in the upcoming phase, which includes multiple domestic and international competitions”.

Fabinho has been a complete footballer during his stay at Anfield, during the last five years. Fans have seen him to be crowned a Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Club World Cup champion, thus, destined to be called a ‘complete footballer’.

One of the greatest names in Liverpool’s rank as a midfielder, Fabinho featured in 219 appearances for the Reds, scoring 11 goals. He would always be remembered for his exploits in the midfield setup under Klopp, when he used to gift several long passes to strikers and wingers alike, eventually leading to a goal.

Liverpool has thanked him in an official statement which read, “We would like to thank Fabinho for all of his contributions to the club’s successes during the last five years.” For the Reds, it has been a tough week as they have lost two of their best midfielders in the form of Henderson and Fabinho, with more departures lined up as Naby Keita, James Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain can depart the club as their contracts have expired.
