Initial talks have been affirmative as has been reported, with contract duration open till 2028.

Frenkie De Jong to renew contract

Frenkie De Jong has been one of the top stars for FC Barcelona, over last few seasons. The former Ajax playmaker, who was instrumental in leading the Dutch side to the prestigious UEFA Champions League semifinal position, has been a dependable person in Barca’s midfield. Often dubbed as the perfect successor of former Barca stalwart Sergio Busquets, De Jong has always been on the money when it comes to showcasing his skills and proving his mettle. Although last season, he was touted to leave Camp Nou to pursue a career at the Theatre of Dreams in Manchester United, the tactical Dutchman had made his intentions clear by staying at the club, as boss Xavi weighs on him as one of the stars in Catalan shirt.

This season, he has been rewarded for his exemplary antics in the field, when he was awarded the captain’s armband by Xavi, following the departure of seasoned stars Busquets and Jordi Alba, who are plying their trade on the American soil, as a former Barca troika has formed with Argentine World Cup winner Lionel Messi joining the ranks of Inter Miami, along with them.

The lynchpin from Barcelona is currently rumored to have opened talks with the club board to decide upon his future. The 26-year old, who has been shouldering the duties of a proper midfielder this season with former Southampton man Oriol Romeu playing in the position of Busquets, got injured in the game against Celta Vigo, and is expected to be on the sidelines for over a month, and a vital El Clasico miss is looming at him. According to Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo, initial contacts have been made with De Jong for the extension of his contract, which might see him in the Catalan colors till 2028.

One of the highest earners in the club

Frenkie had previously signed a lucrative contract in 2020, which would expire at the end of 2026, thus making him one of the highest earners in the Barca hierarchy. It has been reported according to several outlets that it would probably a contract with a reduced salary, like the one with current custodian Marc Andre Ter Stegen, as the German keeper had signed a contract few weeks ago, which comprised a significant reduction at his salary, thus helping Barcelona out from their financial shackles which had impeded Barca’s progress over last few seasons.

New Sporting Director of Barcelona and former legendary star in the Catalan colors, Deco, is already reported to have held contract extension talks with the Dutch midfielder, thus communicating club’s intentions of keeping the midfield stalwart at the club for a longer duration. It is also expected that Deco has informed Frenkie about the extension which is not to be a Fair Play easing, but his extension would be held on the grounds of pure sporting criteria.

De Jong has previously iterated their idea of staying at the club, as he and his partner have settled well in the city. He has previously stated his elation on staying at the club, as he was heard saying, “My contract renewal? My agent is taking care of that, but I’m happy here.” With positive talks in the first stage, Deco’s next intention will be initiating negotiations with De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, as club director would look to tie down the contract extension by next year, as it will be crucial for the Dutchman to stay at the club for next few seasons, as he continues to stay pivotal to Xavi and club’s needs.
