FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023: A huge blow for French team as skipper Wendie Renard set to miss clash against Brazil

One of the shocking news which have hit the French women team is their captain Wendie Renard missing out on a mouth-watering clash against Brazil. According to French news outlet L’Equipe, Renard is set to sit out against Brazil after she suffered a knock in the surprise stalemate against Jamaica.

Wendie Renard to sit out high voltage clash

French National team is set to miss one of their greatest stars ahead of one of the biggest matches of the tournament, when Les Bleues are locking horns with Canarinhas, in a vital Group F showdown. Skipper Wendie Renard is set to be sidelined in this high voltage tie, as reports believe that the Olympique Lyon center-back has suffered a knock during the previous group game against Jamaica. The island wonders have astonished football supporters when they pulled off a remarkable stalemate against France, one of the best in business over the last few years. In that game, Renard is rumored to have been hit with a thigh strain, which probably will compel her to sit out the game.

Huge blow in the tournament

Renard has been one of the top stars in the French back-line over the years. She played out the entire game including stoppage time in their opener against Jamaica, when opponent star Bunny Shaw was red carded for her nasty tackle on the French defender. Her exclusion from the squad can lead to vital loss in the defensive set-up for “les bleues”. Coach Herve Renard could be having a headache without his star as they will hope for an early return for Wendie, as the team will be needing her urgently when the knockout campaign starts. Currently, they sit on a mediocre second position with a solitary point.

With Brazil up next, who have mauled past Panama by a margin of 4-0, Herve Renard is set to shuffle his pack as they will be missing out several other stars too, as the injury list includes Renard’s fellow center-back Mbock who is injured from a knee dislocation, Delphine Cascarino, who is currently recuperating from a torn ACL, among several others. Lakrar, who started as a right back against Jamaica, is expected to be fielded as a central defender against Brazil, replacing Renard.

It would be an all important tie for French players as a defeat against the legendary Marta’s Brazil will jeopardize their chances for progressing on to the next stages of the tournament, as after Brazil, France will be up against Panama, in their last game in Group F.
