FC Barcelona could receive a bad news in the next day of their remarkable ‘remontada’ against Celta Vigo, as it is reported that their midfield maestro, the Dutchman, Frenkie De Jong, has sprained his right ankle. He was taken off the field ten minutes from first-half whistle and was replaced by Gavi.
Frenkie De Jong injured
Frenkie De Jong has been one of the dependable stars for the La Liga champions over the last few seasons. Joining from Ajax after a career-defining era which saw them reaching the semifinals of UEFA Champions League, and defeating the likes of several heavyweights like Real Madrid and Juventus en route, De Jong has been looked upon as one of the mainstays in the Barcelona midfield set-up. A part of the prestigious troika of Busquets-Pedri-Frenkie, the Dutchman is widely recognized as a ball possessing midfielder, with his exploits ranging from making penetrative inroads in the opponent defense to guarding the wall when there is a threat from opponent attacks.
After a successful last season, Frenkie, who is undoubtedly a started in Xavi’s set-up was asked to shoulder the responsibilities of the legendary Sergio Busquets, who left the club, leaving behind a legacy and huge boots to fill in. The Dutch star has happily carried that legacy forward this season, thus becoming one of the important members in the squad, and was rewarded with the captain’s armband this season. Xavi has trusted on Frenkie as one of the respectable and trusted soldiers in his army, thus becoming a regular starter for the Catalans.
Last night, Barcelona were down to 0-2 when remontada happened for the Blaugranas, as a Lewandowski brace and Cancelo stunner sealed the deal for Barca, after they smashed three goals in nine minutes, as the defending La Liga champions went from 0-2 down to lead 3-2 in nine minutes. But, De Jong’s injury might have overshadowed their victory parade, as the extent of his unavailability remains a concern for Xavi, owing to several crunch fixtures lined up in the upcoming days.
“He is out..”
Frenkie De Jong’s extent of unavailability could be uncertain as he has sprained his right ankle, and was seen moving off the field with a bit of discomfort. The official statement of Barcelona read, “Tests carried out have shown that Frenkie de Jong has a high right ankle sprain. He is out and his recovery will determine his availability.” Thus, a matter of concern for Xavi as along with Pedri, Barca are now going to miss their star midfielder De Jong too, and he could be out till November.
This setback comes at the cost of the Dutch international missing out several important games against Sevilla in the league. Among UCL matches, De Jong is slated to miss the games against FC Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, at the least. If matters get worse, he might be out for the all-important El Clasico, which is scheduled to take place on 28th October. This could be unfortunate for Xavi as he is already without his star midfielder Pedri, as the 20-year old is recuperating from his injury and is eager to get back on pitch after the next international break, in October.
