Barcelona has started to make its move in the transfer market as they register there first big signing for the next season as Manchester City captain and treble winner Ilkay Gundogan has agreed to join the La Liga champions Barcelona. He is set to don the Blaugrana colors from the next season, which extends for two years, with an option to extend for 12 more months.
Ilkay Gundogan set to join Barcelona
Ilkay Gundogan has been a crunch name in England, especially in Manchester. Considered to be a fringe player for Pep’s team, he has always lived up to his expectations and elevated himself to the mode of super human whenever the team needed him. Be it in clutch matches like the Manchester Derby in the final of FA Cup or in the title decider against Arsenal, he will always live up to his legendary status by scoring winners or assisting team mates.
“Gundo”, as his friends and teammates lovingly call him, was always one of the responsible players for Pep Guardiola as he will always look up to his captain whenever the team needed him. This year, he led his side to a memorable treble win after completing a clean sweep of trophies after winning FA Cup, Premier League and finally, the most coveted UEFA Champions League, which was also Pep’s first victory of the Europe’s elite with the “Cityzens”, after missing out narrowly two years back to Premier League rival Chelsea.
Boost for Catalan midfield
The world has seen the rise of Barcelona like a phoenix under Xavi, especially in this season, when they defeated nemesis Real Madrid in Spanish Super Cup, and registering a famous La Liga triumph after a hiatus of four years. The likes of youngsters like Pedri, Gavi, Balde and Ansu Fati coupled with seasoned veterans like Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Robert Lewandowski has led Barcelona to be one of the top forces to reckon with in the European circuit. After narrowly missing out signing their legend and favorite boy Lionel Messi in what could have been labelled as a “fairytale return”, this contract with Gundogan will boost the mentality of Culers.
With legendary Busquets already leaving the club as a legend, Gundogan will be instrumental in leading the midfield battery coupled with young talents Pedri and Gavi. He will be the driving force behind pushing the central midfield and will like to continue his legendary status so that Xavi can be able to count on him in clutch moments.
In the recently concluded season, he scored 11 goals, with six coming in the last seven games as City stepped to up their ante after an intense treble pursuit. During his seven year tenure in the Etihad, he has achieved everything, with his trophy cabinet boasting of five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the most coveted Champions League, as he will be remembered as one of the legends ever to play for the club.
