Indian football is enjoying a bright spree as the Indian men’s team storm into the finals of the SAFF Championship 2023 after beating Lebanon in the semifinals in a 4-2 victory through penalties.
India wins SAFF Championship semifinals against Lebanon
The Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru saw a historic victory unfold as India had never beaten Lebanon in 46 years, and now have defeated them twice in a time frame of 2 weeks. Previously India thrashed Lebanon in 2-0 win in Bhubaneswar for the Intercontinental Cup final.
The deadlock between both the teams was on the threshold but unbroken in 120 minutes of open play, and hence ended up going into a decisive penalty shootout.
The Indian team presented a commendable performance in the shootout, with Sunil Chhetri, Anwar Ali, Naoren Mahesh Singh and Udanta Singh, all of them finding success in their shots, providing India with 4 crucial goals.
India to face Kuwait in the finals of SAFF Championship
Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu emerged as hero in the decisive shootout, as he saved Lebanon’s first penalty which was taken by Lebanese captain Hassan Maatouk. Later, Khalik Bader from the Lebanese side sent his shot flying over the goalpost, which stamped India’s win.
The Indian team is now all set to go up against Kuwait for the finals of the SAFF Championship; Kuwait had previously beaten Bangladesh national team 1-0 in the second semi-finals of the tournament.
