Lionel Messi, one of the greatest stalwarts of world football, has once again proved his might, this time in the American soil as he scored a late free-kick in League Cup where his team Inter Miami cruised past Cruz Azul by 2-1. Messi started on the bench, but soon became instrumental in leading the side to a classy finish.
Poetic Messi finish
Lionel Messi, the undisputed Greatest of All Time, has proved his mettle and showed his class time and again over his entire career. Be it for his boyhood club FC Barcelona, where he is classified as one of the stars, or for his national team Argentina, the ‘little boy from Rosario”, never failed to surprise us with his skills, dribbles and outrageous shots.
Last week, Messi was unveiled as an Inter Miami player by the club owner and legendary football star David Beckham. He comes on the back of a stellar career in French champions PSG, where he clinched two consecutive Ligue 1 titles, but was unenthusiastic in continuing for the Parisian club, after some tumultuous last few months. As a result of which, he was not short of any suitors for his next destination, but Messi had an “American dream”, which he mentioned few years back, and finally got the chance to pursue that when he was brought on deck by Beckham owned side Inter Miami. Thus, Messi became the latest elite player to play in the American soil after several stars like Beckham, Ibrahimovic among many others.
A dream debut
Messi was named on the bench in the crunch game against Cruz Azul in their fixture of the Leagues Cup, thus fans getting ensured of a star debut. Several stars were in attendance to witness a classic Messi debut, including the likes of Basketball legend Lebron James and Hollywood star Kim Kardashian. Messi did not disappoint them as he came off the bench 10 minutes after half time, replacing Benjamin Cremaschi, when his side was 1-0 up, thanks to a screamer from Robert Taylor. A thumping roar greeted the star as DRV PNK Stadium was up on its feet to welcome their favorite star.
It was on the dying minutes of the game when Miami were awarded a free-kick just outside the box, and none other than the man, the myth, Lionel Messi stepped up to shoot the kick. The kick swerved past the Cruz Azul wall, as it sailed above them to the corner of the goal, far past the goalkeeper, thus fetching Miami a win which took them to the next stage of the tournament.
“I knew I had to score”, says the legend
After earning the bragging rights of scoring a debut goal, he ran towards the stands where Miami fans graced his might, thus celebrating his first goal of many in the Miami colors. After the match, he was heard saying, “I knew I had to score, it was the last play of the game and I had to score, so we didn’t go to penalties. It was very important for us to get this win because it’s a new tournament, and it’s going to give us confidence moving forward.”
Owner Beckham was all praise for his latest legendary entry in his team, as he said, “As soon as I saw the free kick given I thought this is the way it’s meant to end. It’s so exciting tonight for our fans. All of these people that have come down here to see Leo just step on the pitch, let alone just do what he’s done. It’s a dream come true for everybody in this stadium and everybody around this country to see Leo step into the MLS and perform, and I don’t have many words for that.”
Miami fans have got a taste of their star player as Messi would look to continue his streak of scoring as it will help Inter Miami to achieve some respectable position in MLS, as they stand on the last position, and American soil would brace for some poetic finishes like this.
