Joao Cancelo might have put his name on the transfer market amidst departure rumors from Manchester City. According to football transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese star will be leaving the treble winners after being on loan at German champions Bayern Munich for the last few months.
Joao Cancelo to leave Manchester City
Joao Cancelo has been one of the top defenders this season, both for Manchester City and Bayern Munich. Although his departure from the Cityzens came as a surprise for the football circuit, but he thrived in the German side Bayern Munich, thus switching his club allegiance from one serial champions to another serial winners.
He went to Munich on loan in the winter transfer window, as he was asked to spend the remainder of the season there. According to reports, the German champions have an option to buy the player but it is most likely that they might not activate it, allowing the Portuguese to depart the club.
City boss Pep Guardiola has some other tone while talking about Cancelo. He said that he declared him “to leave” and would even have sanctioned a move to crosstown rivals Manchester United, and also spoke about the misinformation to Barcelona regarding him.
He said, “I think they [Barcelona] have informed him very badly. He is far from reality. The reality was that we decided that he had to leave and we didn’t care where he was going, even if he wanted to go to United, which is our rival. There is his agent and the clubs they agree. I won’t say that they deceived him but that they misinformed him.”
Guardiola also added that the decision to go to Bayern was made “by the footballer and Bayern”.
Heading for new destination?
Cancelo has thrived in the defensive wingback position, mostly playing as a left back this season for both the clubs, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. In 47 games he played this season, he has netted three goals but has assisted his teammates on 11 different occasions, having a comparatively modest season.
Based on his stats and fruitful result in the left back position, he is mainly preferred to be a left back. Several clubs will be eager to bring on board the 29 year old Portuguese star including Barcelona, as the Catalan club and La Liga champions will be looking for a reinforcement in their left defensive sector.
Barcelona has recently seen their legendary Jordi Alba departing the club after lighting up Camp Nou for a decade. Alba’s departure had paved way for youngsters like Alejandro Balde to make a promising start to his career as the youngster will be upbeat to continue his blazing form in that position.
He has been a regular starter for Xavi owing to his lightening speed and immaculate clearances teamed up with blitzkrieg runs through the sidelines, and is well on course to be a starter for Xavi in the next season.
But, Barca are in a dire need for another option in the left wingback as they would like to strengthen their side and Cancelo would be a valuable option in that area.
It would be interesting to see that Barca could make this sign viable after resolving their hindrances from Financial Fair Play gets resolved.
