Lamine Yamal, the 16-year old FC Barcelona prodigy, a overwhelming product of Barca’s academy La Masia, has come in the radar of Spain National team coach Luis De La Fuente, as the boss is vouching for selecting the teenage wonderkid. Yamal became the youngest Barcelona player to start a game in a century, when he was fielded against Cadiz on Sunday, at 16 years and 38 days.
Lamine Yamal- the teenage prodigy
FC Barcelona has always been a reservoir for housing bright future stars. La Masia- the repertoire of young talents who would become the future stars in World Football, has always delivered its results and has lived up to the expectations of every Culer. Starting with Argentine legend and World Cup winner Lionel Messi to present boss Xavi, everyone has graced La Masia campus once, and went on to become generational talents in the future. People say that Barcelona has the capability of fielding an entire eleven players from their academy, as they often express their pride in building youth talents to stalwarts.
In the last few seasons, several youngsters like Gavi, Ansu Fati and Alejandro Balde has been featured in the Barca’s starting eleven, often showcasing the talent and might they possess. They have become eminent members of the Blaugranas and are considered “untouchables”, owing to their exploits on the ground. Last season, it was time for another Barca star to prove his mettle of Barcelona blood as 15-year old Lamine Yamal was called up to the squad. Eventually, he became the youngest debutant for the La Liga giants, at 15 years, surpassing Barca’s current no.10, Ansu Fati. He became the youngest winner of La Liga too, when Barcelona lifted the trophy few days later, after a hiatus of four years.
Youngest starter for Barca
Lamine created another milestone this season when he was named in the starting eleven against Cadiz, becoming the youngest starter at 16 year and 38 days, at Barca’s new ‘home’, Estadi Lluis Olimpic Stadium. He was asked to shoulder the responsibility of a right winger, and was slated to assist Robert Lewandowski, Barca’s main face at the front. He impressed on his debut, with creating several chances and stitching up a valuable partnership with Lewandowski, before being substituted. Owing to his exploits in that game, Spain national team coach and UEFA Nations League winner Luis De La Fuente is considering bringing Lamine on deck for a series of international friendlies, as he would like to include the youngster in the squad.
Spain has always supported youngsters as former boss Luis Enrique showed support for 16-year old Gavi, when the “prodigal child” of Barcelona was called up to the squad. But, what acts as a hindrance for Yamal is he is eligible to play for three countries owing to his parents, as his mother hails from Equatorial Guinea, father from Morocco and himself being Spaniard by birth.
According to Joan Fontes, Lamine had made his decision of representing Morocco several months ago. But, according to the present scenario, Lamine, having played for Spain under-17s and representing them in the Under-17 European championship, his omission from the Under-18 squad announced yesterday might have made De La Fuente ponder over his inclusion in the senior side, which is slated to play friendlies in the coming months.
With the caliber of Yamal and the talent he possesses, he could well become one of the greatest wingers for Spain in the coming years, and Spaniards would love him to play for them. “La Roja” has previously handed maiden call-ups to other stars who are eligible to play for other countries, like Bojan Krkic, Ez Abde and Munir El Haddadi. Yamal will be on the line to create history if he is called up by De La Fuente in the coming days, as the entire nation would look at the youngster if he makes his debut for “La Roja”.
