Lionel Messi led Inter Miami wins Leagues Cup
Lionel Messi has been a phenomenon since the day he arrived on the American soil. Labelled as one of the biggest stars of football, he has been the driving force behind Inter Miami’s meteoric rise, as the Florida based club was going through a poor run in the league, amassing 5 wins in 22 fixtures, then Messi happened to them. The Argentine World Cup winner has been instrumental in spearheading the attack of Miami, as he scored 10 goals in meagre 7 matches, and has been one of the top performers for the club in the tournament.
He started his Miami debut with a stereotypical Messi-esque free-kick on the dying minutes against Cruz Azul, when both teams were tied at 1-1, Messi produced his trademark shot at the goal, thus winning the game and hearts of Miami fans. Since then, he did not have to look back. He produced consecutive braces in next few fixtures, which also included a screamer against FC Dallas, when he weaved his magic web in the final ten minutes, as they trailed 4-2 to quicky equalize 4-4. In the semifinal fixture against Philadelphia Union, he got his name registered on the scoresheet by scoring a world-class long range screamer, as they defeated the Phillys 4-1, to enter the finals as favorites to win the cup.
Lionel Messi and trophies- an eternal love story
With the Leagues Cup trophy, Lionel Messi surpasses his long term mate, former FC Barcelona star Dani Alves, in terms of number of trophies won. In the decorated list of crowns achieved, Messi stands atop, with 44 trophies, one of the ‘beasts’ of football. He has been one of the miraculous performers in “the beautiful game”, and has rightly achieved the title of most decorated football player.
A legend in Barcelona, he has been the face of the Catalan giants over decades after deciding for a staggering move to PSG in 2021. He achieved many accolades for the Spanish heavyweights which include several La Ligas, and the coveted Champions League. The most satisfying and sweet moment in his career came last year, when he led a young but agile Argentine side to their World Cup title, after Maradona achieved this feat in Mexico, three decades ago.
A prolific playmaker, Messi has led the side with all his might and experience, as people say Inter Miami has got a second chance to thrive in the American football scenario. Coming in the tournament as the worst team to winning the Leagues Cup in a 11-round penalty shoot-out drama, Inter Miami has seen it all, and America has seen the might and caliber of Messi, over the past few months.
Due to his remarkable achievements in the tournament, he went on to win the best player of the tournament and top scorer, already establishing a knack of winning trophies on the American soil. Aging like fine wine!
It would be interesting to see how Messi and brigade keep up their good form as they are in contention for one more trophy within a week, when they will face-off FC Cincinnati in the semifinals of US Open Cup, with a spot to play the finals, and Messi to add one more feather to his prestigious trophy cabinet.
