It has been a heartbreak for the Barca fans as their legend and their favorite man Lionel Messi has chosen to join MLS side Inter Miami for the next season instead of coming back to his “home”. It was reported as Messi can join hands with his former teammate Xavi, who has recently led Barcelona to win their most coveted La Liga trophy, after a hiatus of four years. Barcelona offered an official update on the situation after Messi announced his new destination to be United States.
Messi joins hands with David Beckham owned Inter Miami
Lionel Messi had an emotional farewell in FC Barcelona after he was hindered by signing a contract at the Catalan club, due to the financial shackles of Financial Fair Play, which could not comply with Messi’s needs. As a result, he was forced to leave his club, which led him to sign for the French champions PSG in 2021. He was greeted warmly in the French capital, and had lit up the streets of Paris with his skills and dribbling finesse.
Things took a tumultuous turn in the last few weeks as he was disbanded from all activities of the Paris club after he took an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia. He was booed and whistled by the PSG supporters who were upset about his trip, which led to the evitable, with Messi deciding that he would not be continuing in the capital and would look out for new destination.
Ready to return home, but….
As soon as the news of Messi not renewing his contract came to the fore, several top clubs like his former home FC Barcelona, Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal and MLS side Inter Miami were ready to include him to their squad. Everyone in the football circuit were hoping of a Messi-Xavi reunion just like good old days, but it was just not meant to be as once again the Financial Fair Play hindrances came to play, inhibiting this dream “Catalan reunion”.
Messi chose to join hands with another football legend David Beckham as he will make his debut in the United States, hoping to spring his legacy there. He has confirmed his decision to play for Inter Miami, which broke the hearts of millions of Culers all across the world.
Barcelona, the club where he was slated to return, posted an official statement regarding his transfer story, thus ending any further speculations. The statement read, “On Monday, June 5, Jorge Messi, the player’s father and representative, informed Club President Joan Laporta of the player’s decision to join Inter Miami, despite having been presented with a proposal from Barca, in consideration of the desire of both FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi for him to once again wear Blaugrana.”
It also included, “President Laporta understood and respected Messi’s decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, further away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been subject to in recent years.”
Barcelona has also spoken about the necessity and plans of giving their legend a proper farewell, but expressed their gratitude for the honors and accolades he had shared with them. It read, “Both Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi also agreed to work together to promote a proper tribute from Barça fans to honor a footballer who has been, is, and always will be beloved by Barca.”
Barcelona fans may have to wait for few more years to give a proper tribute to their homegrown favorite boy, “The Little Boy from Rosario”, as explained by the legendary Peter Drury after Messi won the most coveted and yearned World Cup, last year in Qatar.
