French champions Paris Saint-Germain are facing their worst transfer conundrum in the recent weeks. Argentine football stalwart Lionel Messi has left the club, and is swooning everyone with his magic wand on the American soil and their star striker Kylian Mbappe is considering leaving the club. Amidst all of these, Parisians would be stunned to hear that their newly appointed coach Luis Enrique might depart the club, a month after joining.
PSG’s transfer saga takes a toll on others
French giants Paris Saint Germain has been one of the top teams over last few years. Their ability to sign top tier players from Europe and other continents has been the talk of the town over years, as they have gone for Barcelona stars like Neymar, football legend Lionel Messi, who signed for “Les Parisiens” following a tumultuous exit from Barcelona in 2021, and now they are eyeing another Catalan icon, Ousmane Dembele, who is set to seal a deal for the French club, putting pen on paper for a stipulated period of 5 years, till 2028.
But, since last few weeks, they have been on the headlines for a ‘stereotypical’ transfer saga, as their superstar, local boy and French World Cup winner in 2018, Kylian Mbappe has blasted the capital city of France by not signing a contract extension for them. It was speculated that Mbappe might have established contact with Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid, and is slated to don the Blancos jersey from 2024. But, what turned everyone’s heads up in surprise was Mbappe’s exclusion from PSG’s pre-season tour to Asia. It was at this moment, everyone thought that maybe Mbappe has played his last game in PSG colors, as he was given an ultimatum to sign a contract extension before August 1, else the club would accept any offer for the player.
Former Spain and Barcelona manager joins PSG
As a result of the last season, which saw PSG’s inability to advance to the further stages of the European elite competition UEFA Champions League despite having the best players on block, owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi decided to go with a stronger management. They decided to bring on deck former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, which will see him manage the French giants for a period of two years, till 2025. Luis Campos, PSG’s sporting director, who has signed Enrique and with whom Enrique is revamping a squad which is adept of advancing to the knockout stages of elite competitions, is understood that his continuity in the club is debatable, which have taken Enrique by shock, thus the Spaniard switching his awkward mode on.
Campos and Mbappe had a special relationship which dates back to the star’s Monaco days. It is heard formerly that Campos was contacted by Real president Florentino Perez in the past, but Mbappe chose PSG, thus leading to Campos’ appointment as the unofficial sporting director of PSG. Thus, if Campos is removed from his portfolio, who is a key figure for the Parisians, it would be a loss for the club as all the key decisions are taken simultaneously between Khelaifi and Campos.
Should Enrique leave PSG?
Luis Enrique, on the other hand, is poised on building a top class squad, which is capable enough to take on heavyweight opponents on the bigger stage. But, he has smelled the scent of what has happened to Mbappe, and the Qataris, who are wounded in their pride, might make a chance to announce something which can have an worldwide impact. His right hand man Rafel Pol is considering leaving the club citing ‘personal reasons’, but, if it had been considered true that Campos might leave the club, Enrique would have been the next one to see the exit door.
According to latest reports, it is heard that PSG spokesperson has shoved off all rumors of Campos and Enrique leaving the club, as they are “ridiculous” and “complete nonsense”.
