Matheus Nunes: Wolves midfielder set to join Pep’s Manchester City brigade, verbally agrees to join treble winners

Premier League champions Manchester City has verbally agreed to sign Wolves’ Portuguese international Matheus Nunes, who is believed to be one of the future stars in the midfield set-up. Cityzens have agreed to sign the star from Wolves for a fee of 47.3 million pounds, and is rumored not to have included add-ons to this stipulated fee.

Matheus Nunes to City

Matheus Nunes has been one of the spearheading force of Wolves’ midfield last season, after signing from Sporting Lisbon. He is touted to be one of the next generation footballers, owing to his exploits in the League, ranging from accurate passes to dribbling the ball with finesse, and was instrumental in avoiding relegation for the Wolves, who had finished on a mediocre 13th rank last season.

It is rumored that a previous bid for Nunes by City was rejected by the Wolves’ board, as they wanted an amount excess of 60 million pounds for the Portuguese star. The bid is set to be verbally agreed between both parties, and would soon be put pen on paper, with official confirmation underway. According to several news outlets, it is heard that Nunes has been missing training after confirming his decision to switch allegiance to City.

A potential ‘substitute’ for Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City have added Nunes to the side, keeping one thing in mind, De Bruyne’s unavailability. De Bruyne has been one of the stalwarts of City midfield over the years, and is leading the side this season, after winning the coveted UEFA Champions League last season, against Inter, when Rodri scored the winner. Ilkay Gundogan, the current FC Barcelona player, was the skipper of City last season, but, after his departure, it was decided that De Bruyne would be shouldering the responsibilities of captain. But, City fans were treated with an unfortunate incident when their legend and skipper De Bruyne is forced to sideline after suffering a hamstring knock, which would keep him out for a minimum duration of four months.

With Kovacic, Silva, Rodri and Grealish the potential midfield options for Pep, addition of Nunes would bolster the midfield set-up, as he would bring with him his exceptional talent of dribbling and scoring outrageous goals.

City had further explored their options for a midfield backup in West Ham’s Brazilian star Lucas Paqueta, as he emerged to be one of the frontrunners to sign for Pep’s City, but it is reported that he is under the scrutiny by Football Association for breaching potential betting rules.

The Midlands’ Club signed Nunes last year from Sporting Lisbon, for a club record 38.6 million pounds, making him one of the record signings for the club. In response to Nunes’ signing for City, Gary O’Neil managed side has decided to go for City’s Under-21 star Tommy Doyle, on loan, with an option to buy for 4.3 million pounds, which would be a huge sell-on clause for Pep’s side.

Within a few weeks, it will be clear as whether Nunes fits Pep’s style of play, as the treble winners would look to explore life without De Bruyne, for a few months at least.
