The transfer saga of Moises Caicedo has finally come to an end as the Ecuadorian star has agreed personal terms to join Chelsea, the club with which he had agreed terms, earlier. Incidentally, he had ‘almost’ joined Chelsea’s eternal rivals Liverpool, few days back, but it seems he was destined to join the Blues brigade.
Caicedo to Chelsea- “Here We Go”, finally
Moises Caicedo, the former Brighton star, has been one of the top stars for the Premier League club, which had surprised everyone with its blistering performance throughout the season. Owing to the likes of Caicedo, World Cup winner Alexis MacAllister, Kauru Mitoma, coupled with the strict vigil of Roberto De Zerbi, the “Seagulls” have finished on a handsome 6th position, surpassing several heavyweights like Tottenham and Chelsea. In accordance to the exploits inflicted in the last season, Caicedo had made his place in the radar of several top clubs, which included fellow Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool.
Thus, in the summer transfer window this season, both clubs had to traverse several lengthy contract allowances in order to sign Caicedo. Last week, the news of Caicedo joining Liverpool surfaced, which brought everyone to be awestruck, as it was their rivals Chelsea, who have been hot on the heels for the Ecuadorian. Amidst such information, it was ‘confirmed’ by football transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano that Caicedo has joined the Reds, and his medicals are slated to happen few days later.
A record fee for the star
Chelsea has agreed to buy the star on a record fee of 115 million pounds, a British record transfer fee, overtaking Liverpool, as the Reds have proposed a fee of 111 million pounds. The highly touted Ecuadorian had set his next destination to be Chelsea, as he feels the plan under newly appointed coach Mauricio Pochettino would favor his progress.
The record fee stamped on him meant Chelsea setting transfer milestones twice in 2023, after swooping World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez with a reported fee of 107 million pounds, in January.
Caicedo’s medical is set to be lined up within few days, as he has signed the deal till 2031, with a further extension available till 2032. The humongous match fee set by Brighton was initially thought that no one could have reached that height for the star, as Caicedo arrived in the Premier League from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle for 4 million pounds in February 2021, although he made his debut in April 2022.
Caicedo’s signing will prove fruitful for the Blues as they would look to bolster their midfield options, as he would be their eighth addition to the squad after Nkunku, Disasi, Jackson, Ugochukwu, Angelo Gabriel, Robert Sanchez and Moreira. Pochettino, who has been assigned to revamp the squad has fared well till now, and it would be necessary to see how Caicedo plays for his new side.
