Dembele-the French wizard in the wings

Ousmane Dembele, fondly known as “Dembouz” will soon be a player of the French giants, as he has signed for the reigning French champions PSG for a period of five years. He has been one of the top stars for Barcelona over the years, as his services along the wing will be missed in the upcoming season. He was predominantly known as one of the best wingers and have showcased his skills time and again in the Barcelona shirt.

Having joined from German side Borussia Dortmund in the year 2017, he was given the status of a prolific goal scorer and a stupendous performer in front of the goal. In the Black Yellow camp, Dembele was considered as one of the top strikers of his age, who would destroy any opponents with ease, He made his debut for them in 2016, where his side was defeated 0-2 against arch rivals Bayern Munich, thus embarking upon his legendary career at the elite level. His debut goal for the senior team came against VfL Wolfsburg, when his side mauled their rivals 5-1, in a terrific Bundesliga encounter.

A star for Blaugranas

Owing to his exploits in the Dortmund outfit, he was soon in the radar of Barcelona. As a result, in 2017, he was signed for the Barca hierarchy and was touted to become one of the biggest stars in the club. Barca had sold Neymar in that year, and were in an urgent need of a potent winger capable of neat finishes in front of the goal. He became the second expensive signing that season, and was jointly tied with Paul Pogba.

He made his debut for the Catalans on 9th September, in a grand victory over their crosstown Catalan rivals Espanyol, and he came off the bench on the 68th minute to assist the final goal by Suarez. Almost six months later, he got on the scoresheet for the first time wearing the Barca colors, when he scored in the second leg of UEFA Champions League, rounding off the victory for Blaugranas by a hefty margin of 3-0.

Injuries seemed to have plagued him since the season he joined as in 2017, he suffered a terrible hamstring pain which forced him to the sidelines for a period of four months. Recurring injuries had him seen in a stop-start career in Camp Nou, as in the 2019-20 season of La Liga, he injured his left hamstring in the season opener, and in February the next year, he was forced out of play for a elongated duration of six months, which saw him getting a serious tear in the left hamstring.

In the Barcelona shirt, he has made 185 appearances in which he went on to register his name on the scoresheet on 62 occasions. Among accolades which he received, he won three La Liga titles, 2 Copa Del Rey titles and 2 Spanish Super Cup glories, which will be engraved beside his name.

Dembele and PSG- an unexpected saga

Dembele, who had signed a contract extension last year, had suddenly garnered interest from the French giants, who had seemed to have activated his release clause. It was rumored that PSG and Dembele have agreed their personal terms and the French star is expected to join “Les Parisiens” for a period of five years, starting next season. The deal was rumored to have been held up by Barcelona’s negotiations regarding some minor trifle over the details of the deal, but that issue seems to have solved now, and the French World cup winner has joined PSG.

With Barcelona in dire need of a winger, it is rumored that PSG star Neymar could re-join the ranks of Barcelona once again, after he has not been included in PSG’s squad to face Lorient in the season opener. Dembele becomes the latest entrant in the Barca hierarchy to traverse the Barcelona-PSG window as he follows the footsteps of Neymar and Messi.
