Newcastle United’s Champions League qualification suffered a major blow as they were held 2-2 against Leeds, which continued to make the relegation zone more competitive by staying there. But, it was post match drama as a Leeds spectator walked up to Eddie Howe and barged him in the chest.
Newcastle held as Eddie Howe suffers from security breach
Newcastle has been on a dream run this season. Standing on the third position on the points table and due to the outstanding form of the players, they are well poised for a Champions League entry the next season. But, their hopes of making in to the European glory was marred by a stalemate at Leeds, which was even shattered by a security breach.
Leeds opened the scoring, courtesy a strike from Luke Ayling. Nearly twenty minutes later, Howe’s side salvaged a goal, when Callum Wilson converted the spot-kick, thus gaining a momentum in their play.
But, it was the Leeds’ fan who snatched the highlights of the game, after a rare security breach at Elland Road.
“He makes you think”
After the confrontation, Eddie was left shocked as he said that these security breaches should be kept in mind so that other coaches and support staff does not face it later. He spoke after the game about this confrontation and depicted that he cannot “repeat” what he said.
A pulsating draw
Leeds has been in the relegation zone along with unexpected competitors like Everton, Leicester. Tonight, if they had achieved a win in front of the home crowd, they could have done themselves a favor. But, had it not been for Rasmus Kristensen, they could have faced another defeat. Sam Allardyce managed side would regret the sending off of Junior Firpo, but Kristensen’s deflected strike saved the blushes of the Leeds side.
The Magpies stay on third after this game, ahead of fifth placed Liverpool and closely followed by Manchester United. In the business end of the season, it will be interesting to see how things turn out for them, with a European spot at the back of the mind.
