Manchester United’s injury concerns increases to one more inclusion as star defender Raphael Varane is set to be sidelined for a “few weeks”. Although the reason of injury is unspecified by the club board, it is speculated that the extent of Varane’s injury might be mildly serious as he will be out for few weeks.
Varane set to be sidelined
Raphael Varane has been one of the top stoppers for the Red Devils over the last few months. The former French international, who has enjoyed a streak of successful runs with Real Madrid, winning several UEFA Champions League titles, has played a pivotal role since the last season in United’s defensive set-up. Coupled with Argentine World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez, Varane has been instrumental in spearheading the team’s defense.
On top of that, with Harry Maguire falling down the pecking order, the Martinez-Varane deadly duo were shouldering the responsibility of creating a wall in front of opponent defenders, and were touted as one of the hugely successful defensive pairs. Varane is renowned for his exploits in the defensive sector, which ranges from clearing the ball to lending hand in the attacking front, when there is a call for set-piece, as he would extensively utilize his lanky 1.91 meter structure to slot past the keeper.
It was observed that Varane came off the field during United’s game against Nottingham Forest, where the Red Devils went 0-2 down within four minutes, owing to defensive blunders, but building on Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes’ counter attack, Erik Ten Hag’s men were able to complete a recoup over their opponents. He was substituted on the half-time, and is definitely a big ‘no’ for their trip to Arsenal next weekend, as they would look to face an upbeat Gunners in the next game day.
Potential replacements for Varane
Owing to the craze and vastness of Varane, it would be a potential head-scratcher for United boss as to who should shoulder the responsibility of guarding the defense. With the injury of the French World Cup winner from 2018, Red Devils might reconsider keeping outcast Harry Maguire, who was scraped off his captaincy owing to his falling from the pecking order, last season. Although Maguire is the fourth choice after Swedish star Victor Lindelof, Ten Hag might consider Maguire to come off the bench and shoulder some of the duties.
Maguire, the English international and former Leicester City star, has fallen out of favor for the United board, and was even considered to be sold to West Ham. But owing to Varane’s injury which will force him to be on the sideline for an unspecified time, Ten Hag and brigade might consider giving him his share of opportunity, weighing on the experience and valor he brings to the team.
Apart from Varane, several other United stars are on the bench which includes recently signed Mason Mount, who has switched his allegiance from London to Manchester, and seasoned veteran Luke Shaw. United stand on the 8th position, winning two and losing one to Tottenham Hotspurs, as Red Devils fans would look to bolster their support for the injured stars in the upcoming fixtures.
