FC Barcelona loses one more player due to injury after Brazilian winger Raphinha was substituted last night against Sevilla, as the former Leeds front man has been reported to injure his thigh. He is expected to miss out several key games for the Catalan giants, as he is touted to be out for a month.
Raphinha set to be sidelined
Raphinha has been one of the top stars for Xavi’s Barcelona since last season. One of the vital cog in Marcelo Bielsa’s legendary Leeds United team which earned promotion in the Premier League few years back, Raphinha signed for the Catalans last year. Instantly, he proved his mettle and showcased his class in the attacking front. He was promoted to play in the wings, and was asked to shoulder the responsibility of assisting Polish striker Robert Lewandowski. Over last few months, Raphinha has been instrumental in spearheading Barca’s attack and has always proved himself to be clutch in crucial junctures. Last season, he was often touted to be the next big thing in Barca ranks as he used to soar high above opponent defenders to score flashy headers, and he would always be remembered for his blitzkrieg strike against Real Madrid on the American soil when the Spanish heavyweights met for a pre-season friendly last year.
This season, although he might not have started every game, he has been on the back of Xavi’s mind, and has always geared up for match-winning performances, but last night, he was forced to come off the field in the first half, thus initiating a possible injury setback. On the 34th minute of the game against Sevilla, he was taken off the field, and was replaced by youngster Fermin Lopez, as Raphinha’s injury adds to the increasing list of players missing out crunch games.
Barcelona issues official statement
After the injury, Raphinha was seen clutching his right thigh, as he was gradually seen leaving the ground with a long face. He winced immediately after falling on the ground, when he was trying to recover the ball outstretched. Recently, FC Barcelona has issued an official statement which reads, “Tests have shown that first-team player Raphinha has an injury to the biceps femoris of his right thigh. He is low and his evolution will mark his availability.”
As it stands in the present scenario, it is rumored that Raphinha will most probably be out for more than a month, and is slated to miss several crunch games which are lined up in the upcoming days. In the game against Celta Vigo, Frenkie De Jong was subbed off owing to injuries, and Barca already is without the services of their midfield wizard Pedri.
Frenkie might be missing for more than a month, and the La Liga champions are working on making Pedri available as soon as possible. The injuries of both midfielders is a setback for Barca, as they would be missing games against FC Porto and Granada. With Raphinha in the list now, the Brazilian is expected to miss two more games, against Shakhtar and Athletic Club, which are scheduled to play after the international break in October.
Although his scheduled sideline period ranges one month, Raphinha would be racing against time to recover for the game against Real Madrid, in the end of October, as it would be a vital game in shaping the tournament. With seven games this season, Raphinha has two goals and three assists in his bag, thus proving to be instrumental in Barca attacking set-up.
