Reece James: Chelsea’s homegrown boy becomes club captain, fulfilling a childhood fantasy

Reece James has been appointed the captain of Chelsea, as he was handed the armband by the club board. He becomes one of the youngest captains at 24 years, as he aims to fill big boots of Cesar Azpilicueta, who has departed the club this year, after being a legend for the Blues. Ben Chilwell will be his deputy at the club.

A legendary week for James’ family

It will be a week to rejoice in the James’ family of Chelsea as both of the James brother-sister duo, Lauren and Reece James, have been the talk of the town, within a week apart. Last week, Lauren, who is in the England squad in the FIFA World Cup, has gone berserk with her spectacular goals and assists in England’s world cup fixture against China, and this week, it is his brother Reece who has been handed the Captain’s armband by the club, as he takes over Cesar Azpilicueta, who has departed to ply his trade in his home country, Spain, donning the Atletico de Madrid colors.

Azpilicueta has terminated his 11-year association with the Blues by the end of this season, thus leaving a huge void to fill in the coming days. It was rumored that senior player Thiago SIlva will be handed the captain’s armband, but Todd Boehly owned side has decided to go with their academy graduate James, as they see him to be one of the biggest prospects in the club’s hierarchy.

“I’m so happy”

After being given the honor of leading the Blues this season, James shared his elation on the club’s official website, where he was heard saying, “I’m so happy to take on the role and responsibility. I know I’ve got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited. I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the Academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it’s a great feeling for me and my family.”

Apparently, James has been the longest serving member from Chelsea’s academy squad, being at the club since age six, after his mate Mason Mount has left the club to pursue his dream of playing in Manchester United colors in the “Theatre of Dreams”. A boyhood supporter of the Blues, to lead the club will indeed something to be proud of.

“We’re very pleased”

Chelsea’s newly appointed boss, former Tottenham and PSG gaffer Mauricio Pochettino, has shared his views in appointing James as the club captain. He said, “This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season. “

He further added, “He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas. “

It will get interesting to see how James and his deputy Ben Chilwell leads the Blues after a mediocre performance in the last season when they finished 12th in the Premier League leaderboard.
