Romeo Lavia: Chelsea sign Belgian midfield prodigy, to join Blues’ from Southampton

Chelsea have bolstered their midfield potency once again as they have gone for Belgian teenager Romeo Lavia, with the prodigy set to join the Blues’ from Southampton. Formerly grabbing hold of long-term target Moises Caicedo two days before, Pochettino’s side has set their eyes on the Belgian prodigy, who has been one of the top stars for the Saints’ last season.

Chelsea complete Lavia signing from Southampton

In one of the whirlwind transfer windows which have seen tumultuous signing switch-overs to change of allegiances, there has been one new entrant to the list of surprise grabs, as long-term Liverpool target Romeo Lavia has agreed terms with their eternal rivals, Chelsea. The 19-year old star, who is renowned for his midfield exploits for the Saints’ in the last season, would be a valuable addition to Pochettino’s side, after he came to Blues’ radar when he had dazzled for Southampton last season. Sadly, for a talent like Lavia, he should not be facing relegation at such a young age as he suffered the demotion with Saints’ last season. He has been on the top of priority list for Klopp’s side and the German gaffer had eyed him as a potential replacement for several Reds’ midfield icons like Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. But, he has decided to ply his trade for the Blues, waiting to showcase his skills at the Stamford Bridge.

To sport the Blues’ jersey for seven years

Lavia is set to woo his supporters and critics alike in the Stamford Bridge for a period of seven years, thus keeping him at the club till 2030, and will be sporting the jersey no. 45. His signing will enhance the midfield setup for Blues after the departure of their former stars like Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and N’Golo Kante. Thus, owner Todd Boehly has decided to reinforce his midfield army with the signings of Ecuadorian Moises Caicedo, who was also a Liverpool target, and now Romeo Lavia. Lavia comes to the club with a transfer fee of 58 million pounds, which includes 5 million to be potential add-ons.

After signing for the club, Lavia was heard saying, “I’m really happy join Chelsea and be a part of this exciting project. It’s an amazing football club with a great history and I’m really excited to get started. I can’t wait to meet all my new team-mates and build a chemistry together to achieve great things together.”

He had been welcomed by club board as Co-Sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley mentioned, “We are very pleased to welcome Romeo to Chelsea. He demonstrated his quality in the Premier League last season at Southampton, showing maturity despite his young age, and is a player we have monitored for some time. We believe he is ready to make an impact at Chelsea throughout the current campaign, and in the coming years.”

“Thank you Saints”

Apparently, Lavia had posted a farewell message for Saints’ fans taking to social media few days ago, when he said, “To Saints Fans. As I say goodbye, I want to say a big thank you for everything you have given me during my time here. I’ve instantly felt the love from you all despite us not achieving our shared goals. I’ll never forget the belief the club and Saints all around the world showed me and I hope I was able to repay the faith you put in me. I would especially like to thank all my teammates and all staff members within the club involved closely or not for putting your arms around me since the day I walked through the Staplewood Campus and for all the daily work and help behind the scenes making me become a better person, athlete and football player. You have all played a massive part into making my integration into real professional football easier.”

He further expressed his gratitude by revealing, “I will be forever grateful to you. For those reasons, this club will always remain close to my heart. Good luck this season and I look forward to seeing the club marching back to the Premier League where it belongs very soon! Thank you Saints. Roméo.”
