Manchester United’s latest recruit Sofyan Amrabat is set to be unavailable from Morocco squad after he is reportedly suffering from a major blow, owing to news reports claiming a back injury. The Moroccan international, who was signed on the deadline day by Erik Ten Hag, seems to have to wait longer for his official debut with the Red Devils.
Sofyan Amrabat to miss international games
Sofyan Amrabat, a name which became quite famous after the coveted world cup in Qatar, becomes the latest Manchester United player when he was asked to ply his trade for the Premier League giants from Italian club ACF Fiorentina. A pivot in the midfield, who was known for his exploits in the tournament, as the Moroccans were set to be the biggest surprises of the tournament, reaching the semifinals for the first time, thrashing heavyweights like Spain and Portugal on the way to the final four. He is renowned for his exceptional skill of holding the ball, mastering the art of possession game, a style which his current boss Erik Ten Hag prefers to play often.
A star for the Italian heavyweights Fiorentina, Amrabat has been on the radar of several clubs since the conclusion of the prestigious world cup, with several big guns like FC Barcelona locking him on their next potential midfield maestro. But, he preferred to switch his allegiance to ‘reunite’ with Ten Hag, as he has previously plied his trade for the Dutchman, when he used to play at Dutch Eredivisie league, for Utrecht, thus completely aware of his playing tactics.
A last-minute legendary signing
Amrabat and Manchester United saga was the talk of Carrington as both parties were going through a topsy-turvy phase, ahead of signing. Finally, with thirty minutes left on the clock for the transfer deadline to end, Ten Hag went all guns blazing to sign his favorite midfielder, as Amrabat’s addition would bolster the United midfield, which already boasts Bruno Fernandes and former Real Madrid stalwart Casemiro. The 27-year old was even seen posing for photos and was a prominent figure at the Carrington, as the team trained before going off for the International break. As it stands in the present scenario, United fans might be in for a longer wait to see Amrabat on the field.
In a statement on Morocco Football Association’s website, it was confirmed that Amrabat has been replaced in the squad by Yahya Jeeran, in two international fixtures against Liberia in Agadir and Burkina Faso in Lens, France. The statement read, “Walid Regragui [head coach of Morocco] invited Yahya Gibran, a player for the Wydad Sports Club, to join the national team as it prepares for the two matches it will play against Liberia in Agadir and Burkina Faso in Lens, France.”
The statement further read, “The national team coach, Mr. Walid Regragui, summoned the player, Yahya Jeeran, to replace the injured Sofiane Amrabat.” Earlier news suggested that the defensive midfielder was recuperating from a ‘back injury’, but it was not serious, as his new club, United are yet to confirm the extent of his injury.
But, if he is reported to be sidelined for few weeks, it will be a major blow for the Red Devils as they are currently experiencing an injury crisis, with several top stars sidelined, some notable names being Mason Mount, and Kobbie Mainoo. Among the defensive sector, legendary French star Varane is also out of the field owing to a serious injury, as Ten Hag sweats over the fitness of Lisandro Martinez who was forced off the field against Arsenal, as the Gunners went on to win the game by a margin of 3-1.
